Medical Librarianship Scholarships and Fellowship

Considering a career in medical librarianship?

The Medical Library Association offers two scholarships for current students and an Associate Fellowship for new graduates.

Additionally, the Medical Library Group of Southern California and Arizona offers two scholarships – one for applicants currently employed as library paraprofessionals and another one for students.

Medical Library Association Scholarship

Due December 1, 2014

The Medical Library Association is offering a scholarship of up to $5,000 to encourage library school students who show excellence in scholarship and potential for accomplishment in health science librarianship.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant must be a student entering an ALA-accredited library school OR a student who has at least one-half of the requirements of the program to finish when the scholarship is awarded in February.
  2. Applicant must be a citizen of or have permanent residence in either the United States or Canada.
  3. Past recipients of the MLA Scholarship or the MLA Scholarship for Minority Students are not eligible.

MLA Scholarship for Minority Students

Due December 1, 2014

The Medical Library Association offers an annual scholarship of up to $5,000 for a minority student who is entering an ALA-accredited library school or who is no more than half-way through his or her MLIS coursework. African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, or Pacific Islander American individuals who wish to study health sciences librarianship are encouraged to apply.

Medical Library Group of Southern California and Arizona Scholarship for Paraprofessionals in Health Sciences Libraries

The Medical Library Group of Southern California and Arizona (MLGSCA) continually and vigorously supports the recruitment of outstanding candidates to the profession of health sciences librarianship. One mechanism employed by MLGSCA to accomplish this, is through the provision of a scholarship for paraprofessionals working in health sciences libraries. The amount of $1500 shall be given annually and is intended to provide support for a paraprofessional currently working in a health sciences library and who has shown evidence of interest in pursuing the health sciences specialization in librarianship.

The deadline for submitting applications is December 15.

The Medical Library Group of Southern California and Arizona (MLGSCA) continually and vigorously supports the recruitment of outstanding candidates to the profession of health sciences librarianship. One mechanism employed by MLGSCA is through the provision of student scholarships. One scholarship of $1500 is awarded annually to an excellent library/information science student who has shown evidence of interest in pursuing the health sciences specialization in librarianship.

The scholarship is intended to provide support during a student’s course of study. The scholarship funds can be used as desired by the recipient.

Graduating in 2015?

Consider applying for the Associate Fellowship Program for Librarians.

The application for the 2015-2016 fellowship is due February 5, 2015.

The National Library of Medicine Associate Fellowship Program is a one-year postgraduate training fellowship at the NLM in Bethesda, Maryland, with an optional second year program component. The program is designed to provide a broad foundation in health sciences information services, and to prepare librarians for future leadership roles in health sciences libraries and in health services research.

During the program, Associates will:

  • Learn about the collections, databases, terminologies, research and development, training, outreach, and exhibits that comprise the work and achievements of the National Library of Medicine
  • Understand strategic planning and development at a national level
  • Work on real-life projects that affect libraries and users throughout the country
  • Join a dynamic and successful cohort of alumni
  • Attend professional development conferences and seminars
