Join us for our third Twitter chat on special librarianship — Ask a Law Librarian
On November 19, 2014, from 6:00PM (PST) to 7:00PM (PST), a special #SLAtalk will be dedicated to law librarianship. The SJSU SLASC guest tweeter, Tracy Maleeff — @LibrarySherpa (Twitter), www.librarysherpa.com (blog) and www.linkedin.com/intzmaleeff— will lead the discussion. This Twitter chat will be a fun and informal event allowing students to interact with law librarians from around the world (one of our panelists will be joining us from Australia!).
We invite you to join us, whether you are a librarian who wants to answer questions about talk about your career path, a student with an interest in law librarianship, or just interested in learning about the different career paths available in special libraries.

Ask a Medical Librarian- Twitter Chat with #medlibs chat
Are you curious about the medical librarianship field? Bring your burning questions to share with #medlibs chat and the SJSU Special Libraries Association Student Group on Thursday, October 2 from 9-10 pm EDT (6-7 pm PDT).
All questions you have about medical librarianship are welcome, from what do medical librarians do all day, to issues and concerns medical libraries face. Never participated in a Twitter Chat before? No problem! Just tweet a question to #medlibs during the chat. Don’t be shy!

SJSU ASIS&T Student Chapter Event: Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon
The SJSU ASIS&T Student Chapter is pleased to announce our first LIS-related Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon. Anyone is invited to participate and make a difference in the content of this heavily-used (over 400 million unique visitors each month) information resource. As of July 2014 there were nearly 33 million articles on the Wikipedia platform, with 15,000 new articles added every day and 27 million links redirecting users to additional resources. That’s a lot of potential information to edit and enhance…and there’s always new LIS topics and recent developments to add, too!
Participation is a great way to learn more about the (not-too-techy) technical side of Wikipedia, improve the platform as a data source, and improve the visibility of librarians who are engaged with Wikipedia and other information resources of interest to/used by the global community.
The Edit-a-Thon will be held virtually and asynchronously. Participants should register with SJSU ASIS&T (see below) and can make edits Monday, September 29 through Sunday, October 5. ePortfolio or Thesis: What’s Right for You?

Trying to decide whether the ePortfolio or Thesis option is right for you? Not sure what is involved with each type of project?
SJSU ASIS&T Student Chapter is proud to host our first Career Development event of the fall 2014 semester: ePortfolio or Thesis: What’s Right for You? with our co-sponsors the SJSU SLA Student Chapter. Dr. Debbie Hansen and Dr. Michelle Holschuh Simmons will be speaking about their experiences working with students completing ePortfolios and theses. Both projects may seem overwhelming, but with preparation and planning these culminating experiences are valuable learning tools. They will describe what is involved with each type of project, the workflow and requirements, and the pros and cons. They will also share some best practices and the ways culminating experiences can be used after graduation. There will be plenty of time for Q&A.
Speaker Bios
Dr. Michelle Holschuh Simmons is a Lecturer in the SJSU iSchool and she was the Consulting Librarian for the Arts and Humanities at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, for four years. Michelle was a recipient of the WISE Excellence in Online Teaching Award in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 and she was was awarded the iSchool Outstanding Teacher Award in 2011. Michelle is the co-chair of the iSchool Curriculum and Program Development Committee with Dr. Linda Main. Michelle lives in Monmouth, Illinois, with her husband Bob, who teaches in the Department of Classics at Monmouth College, and their four sons, Ben, David, Marc, and Alex.
An iSchool faculty member since 1989, Dr. Debra Hansen currently teaches in the areas of archives, oral history, history of books and libraries, and information and society. She earned an MLIS from UCLA in 1983 and her doctorate in 1988 from the University of California, Irvine, where she specialized in 19th century American social and women’s history. Dr. Hansen’s research lies at the intersection of history and library science, focusing on the professionalization and feminization of librarianship in the West. Her scholarship has been published in Libraries and Culture, Library Trends and other LIS and history periodicals as well as in edited anthologies and historical encyclopedias.

Stephen Abram: Influencing Skills for Special Librarians
Stephen Abram, MLS, a strategy and direction planning consultant for libraries and the information industry, is principal of Lighthouse Partners, an associate of Dysart & Jones. He is also CEO of the Federation of Ontario Public Libraries.He is a library trend watcher, keynote speaker, innovator and author of Stephen’s Lighthouse blog. He has held executive leadership positions at Cengage Learning (Gale), SirsiDynix, Thomson, ProQuest and IHS. Stephen is also a former SLA president and SJSU SLIS faculty member; and he’s currently a member of the SJSU SLIS International Advisory Council.
