6:15 – 6:30 pm Social Chat

6:30 pm – 7:30 pm Program

Please join the SLASC to hear about different career opportunities you can pursue with an MLIS that don’t involve working in libraries. Check out our website or Facebook page for more details, including information about our wonderful panelists. Join us at 6:15 pm PST for a brief social time prior to the program starting. This is an excellent opportunity to virtually meet fellow students and members of the SLASC Executive Committee. The main event will run from 6:30-7:30 pm.

Scheduled speakers will include:

Jamie Lin – Digital Technologies Librarian at Bridgepoint Education

Jamie Lin is interested in all things related to user-centered design, and understanding how people learn. She works as an Education Technology Designer for a higher education company, and has created a number of interactive multimedia projects for an online academic library. Jamie has also been a research and analysis librarian for Qualcomm, a mobile technology company. Prior to earning her MLIS from San Jose State University in 2014, Jamie worked in academic and public libraries. She serves as the current president of the San Diego Chapter of the Special Libraries Association.

Scott Brown – SJSU Instructor and Senior Cybrarian at Oracle

Scott Brown is a Senior Cybrarian at Oracle, Inc. In his role, he works with strategic teams and initiatives across the company to make better decisions with information. He is an SLA Fellow, with 10+ years supporting the Competitive Intelligence Division.

Anne Barker – Information Specialist in the Legal Department at Genentech

Anne N. Barker is an Information Specialist in the Legal Department at Genentech, a biotechnology company in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she specializes in patent, litigation, and pharmaceutical pipeline research and analysis. After spending 10 years learning the language of patents at a law firm, she made the move “in-house” in 2015 which allowed her to capitalize on her patent knowledge while learning yet another new language in biotech. Anne completed her MLIS from San Jose State University in 2005, and received her B.A. from Illinois Wesleyan University as a double major in English and Theatre Arts.

A member of SLA since 2001, Anne has been active in a variety of roles, most recently serving as Treasurer of the Leadership & Management Division and on the Annual Conference Advisory Council for the upcoming Annual Conference in Cleveland.

Over the last 18 years, Anne has served her home chapter (San Francisco Bay Area) as Awards Committee Chair (2016), Academic Relations Committee Chair (2015), President-Elect, President, Past President (2012-2014), Secretary (2009-2010), Government Relations Chair (2006-2012), and on the Academic Relations Committee (2015 Chair, 2003-2005). She has also held positions as Chair of SLA’s Nominating Committee for the 2016 election, Director of Membership for the Government Information Division (2011), and on SLA’s Public Policy Advisory Council (2009-2011) and Student and Academic Relations Committee (2002-2003).

In her “free” time, Anne is a budding glass blower, a raccoon rehabilitator (physically and reputationally speaking), and a cider enthusiast. Ask her about any of these things to elicit an excited and detailed response.
