Michelle Ng from ALASC and I are friends. In real life! We met through a group of Bay Area iSchool students who wanted to get to know each other in person. It’s been great to put faces with names. Last spring we attended a Baynet event together and met Julie Takata, an iSchool alumna. Julie works at the SFO Aviation Museum & Library. (I see your wheels turning! Did you figure out the connection yet?)
Over the months, Michelle and I talked about how great it would be to visit Julie at her workplace. I mean, what a cool place to work! I think we can all agree on that!
Finally, last semester Michelle made a move to put our ideas into action. She proposed that ALASC and SLASC work together on an in-person tour of the SFO AML. Julie thought it was a great idea and put together a stellar presentation for our group!
The big day came on March 2nd. We were all excited to meet other iSchool students in person, in addition to what we were about to learn on the tour! We assembled in the lobby, an adaption of the airport’s 1930’s passenger lobby. (This would make you long for days of yore – very classy!) Representing ALASC were Michelle Ng and Stefanie Vartabedian and representing SLASC were Grace Kim and your humble author, Rebecca Leung.
Some of the most interesting aspects of Julie’s presentation in my opinion were her description of the difficulties involved in managing the exhibits throughout the airport; the vintage items such as flight attendant uniforms, cutlery, and other airline-related ephemera; and the historical photographs and architectural plans of the airport.
On behalf of SLASC and ALASC, I would like to extend a huge thank you to Julie Takata and the SFO Aviation Museum & Library for hosting us!
But the good news doesn’t end there! Julie mentioned that SFO AML is interested in hosting interns and that they can adapt the internship to fit your interests. So don’t delay, contact them today!
Did you miss it? Stay tuned to SLASC for other enlightening events. Or visit the SFO Aviation Museum & Library next time you are in the International Terminals.
