Carletta Woods, SJSU ASIS&T Vice Chair, Presents at the Third Annual VCARA Conference
The Third Annual VCARA Conference was held on May 10, 2012 from 5:30-8:00pm SLT (PST) in VCARA, the Virtual Center for Archives and Records Administration located on SJSU SLIS Island in Second Life, which is a meeting and exhibit space for students, alumni, and friends of SJSU SLIS interested in archives, records, and special collections. The theme of this year’s VCARA Conference was “Exploring and Developing Career Opportunities in the Digital Age,” featuring several keynote speakers and poster presentations that contributed to the conference’s goal of sharing information and promoting networking opportunities among students, professionals, and educators. Carletta Woods, Vice Chair of the Student Chapter, also known as Li Tomasso in Second Life, proudly represented the SJSU ASIS&T Student Chapter at the VCARA Conference by delivering a keynote that explained the value of becoming involved in student organizations as part of career preparation in a presentation entitled “Student Associations: Jump Start Your Career!”
Carletta’s keynote highlighted the numerous benefits of being a member of student organizations, such as sharing and learning from fellow students, gaining leadership opportunities, cultivating professional contacts, developing skills for a professional career, and exploring career options. Additionally, the wide array of membership benefits and activities offered specifically by the SJSU ASIS&T Student Chapter were emphasized during the discussion as well as the advantages distance learners receive from participating in SJSU SLIS student organizations.
