Topic: Academic Library Administration—A Look at LibraryManagement

The Los Angeles Chapter of ASIS&T and the SJSU ASIS&T Student Chapter cordially invite you to a presentation by Marianne Afifi, Associate Dean of the Oviatt Library at California State University Northridge.  Ms. Afifi is responsible for the Library’s day-to-day operations, a variety of library services, emergency planning and facilities, as well as for Special Collections & Archives. She also participates in strategic planning, decision-making and fund raising efforts for the Library. Ms. Afifi recently served as the Acting Dean of the Oviatt Library. Previously, she held the position of Director of Electronic Resources & Special Projects Development in the Information Services Division of the University of Southern California. There she managed electronic information resources access, delivery and development. She also provided leadership for digital library and systems projects as well as online learning development. She was an active participant in the shaping of library technology services in the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Library, one of the first state-of-the-art libraries that combined technology and library services.

Her publications reflect her involvement in the library and information science community locally, nationally, and internationally. She served on the Board of Directors of the American Society for Information Science & Technology and is a member of the American Library Association as well as the Association for Computing Machinery. She holds an M.B.A. from the University of Southern California and an M.L.S. in Information Systems Design from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Ms. Afifi’s presentation will address the roles of academic library administrators, what their work commonly entails, and how they fit into library and campus organizational structures. Ms. Afifi will give some examples of some of the work she is involved in and answer any questions students might have.
