Walnut Creek Tour Recap

SLIS students meet at the Walnut Creek Public Library on August 6th as part of a free ALASC Library Tour. Eight students and one faculty member attended. Cindy Brittain, Senior Community Library Manager, and Bill Kolb, recent SLIS grad and current Teen Services Librarian, provided insight into the overall management and development of the new library. Following the tour, students and WCPL staff sat in the library’s conference room and discussed color-coded carpeting, fundraising by the Friends of the Library, communication systems, digital signage, artwork, and after school programs. ALASC is proud to offer programs like the Walnut Creek Public Library tour that provide students with additional insight into local libraries and to offer networking opportunities with other students. Stay tuned as more tours and events are scheduled!

SJSU SLIS students offer rave reviews of ALASC Tour at Walnut Creek Public Library in Walnut Creek, CA.

I spoke to several students about classes, talked to an instructor (Debbie Faires) about the e-port, and also discussed the e-port with an alum and fellow students. When I got home, I wrote to each, listened to an Elluminate session on the e-port and even started working on organizing evidence for my e-port. For me, the personal connection was instrumental in moving forward on the culminating project (the e-portfolio).

It’s always good to meet other people face-to-face and reconnect with others I already know. Putting faces to names is great! Anthony Burik, SLIS Student

I was interested in hearing the ‘inside story’ on the new library and in meeting some SLIS folks.
Carol Buchalter, SLIS Student

I thoroughly enjoyed the WC Library tour! Cindy Brittain, Senior Community Library Manager, and Bill Kolb, recent SLIS grad and current Teen Services Librarian, were very generous with their time. They spent two hours with us. We had an hour to tour the facility before it opened to the public. We spent more time in a conference room for further discussion. Debbie Faires, SLIS Instructor
