First ALASC profile: Elissa Papendick

Welcome to our first ALASC profile.  This is a series of introductions of ALASC board members, SLIS students, and other information professionals who you may want to hear from.  If you’re interested in being profiled, please message us!  This one was published on our Facebook page in September.

For our first profile, please welcome Elissa Papendick.  Elissa is our Regional Events Coordinator on the board.  She is the one coordinating these wonderful regional tours of libraries.

Introduce yourself!

I am a Bay Area native currently living in Oakland, CA. Since April 2012 I have been working at Mills College as the Circulation Supervisor. Prior to working at Mills, I received masters degrees in Art History and Arts Administration from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Lately, I’ve been learning how to bee keep and just helped harvest some honey! I also like to garden, read and cook. And when I’m not busy studying, you’ll likely find me at the beach or hiking in the nearby hills.

Why are you at SLIS?

I have worked in various libraries since 2002 and am very excited to be in the SLIS program. I am hoping to combine my background in art history and become an art librarian. I’m also interested in access services, visual resources, digital collections and open access publishing.

What’s the best part of being a member of ALASC?

Meeting other students virtually and in person!

What are some fears and hopes you have about the field?

A fear about the field is a continued lack of funding for libraries. A hope is that libraries can continue to play a key role in reducing the digital divide. I also hope that more academic libraries will take the lead on open access publishing.
