SLASC Presents: Preserving Liberty – Collections and Archives at the Statue of Liberty National Monument
Matthew Housch, Curator of Collections and Archives at the Statue of Liberty National Monument, discussed the work of preserving the historical treasures of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Hear firsthand about the unique challenges involved in maintaining these collections, and discover how they help tell the story of immigration, freedom, and American identity. The museum collection includes approximately 390,000 individual artifacts and over 1 million archival records documenting the history of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island. This includes monographs, manuscripts, rare books, government reports, oral histories, architectural drawings, blueprints, and a film collection of slides, negatives and prints. The Library files also include a wide variety of National Park Service historical and technical reports such as archeological studies, historic structure reports, and cultural landscape reports. The collection consists primarily of site-related materials that the National Park Service is legally mandated to collect and preserve and contributes to the Park’s interpretive themes. These materials are used to educate and inspire present and future generations about the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island though exhibits, research, interpretive programs, publications, and the media!
