ALASC and SLASC were excited to host a joint event featuring the Toronto Public Library on 3/13/25 at 4pm. You can learn more about the Merril collection here:
Lucas shared some information on the Merril Collection with us such as:
- It contains over 80,000 items of fiction, non-fiction, graphic books, art, and more!
- The collection hold genres like romantasy, horror, cyber punk, and magical realism.
- The Merril Collection is titled after its donor, Judith Merril, who was a science fiction author.
- Anyone can visit the Merril Collection’s reading room, even if you don’t have a library card!
Some of the objects held within the Merril collection are first editions of books like Dracula written by Bram Stoker and War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells.

After the tour, Lucas was gracious enough to answer questions from the audience. Thanks again to Lucas for allowing SJSU students to get an inside look at a special collection from within the Toronto Public Library!
This event gave an insight to Canadian archival practices, which may be different from U.S. archival practices!
We hope you enjoyed the event/recap, and we look forward to seeing you at our future events!
