Dr. Sue Alman is an experienced and well learned information scientist with an eye towards the future. Her areas of specialization include management, strategic planning, futures, and blockchain technology. She has been teaching at SJSU full-time since 2012. Before SJSU, Dr. Alman taught at the University of Michigan and the University of Pittsburgh. You can take her course INFO 282: The Emerging Future: Technology Issues and Trends. She also teaches INFO 283 – Marketing of Information Products and Services and INFO 286 – Interpersonal Communication Skills for Librarians and of course, INFO 204. We caught up with her to ask her what it takes for a student to succeed in this foundational course.
1. What is the main focus of INFO 204?
INFO 204 is a fast-paced overview of the work that information professionals do and the types of organizations where they work. Many topics are covered in each module so that students can gain a perspective on the breadth of opportunities in the profession and decide which areas they want to explore in depth in elective courses.
2. Where do students get tripped up in INFO 204, and what are some of the tools available to help them?
Students new to online education and graduate education may need some time to learn how to manage academics, work, and personal responsibilities, and they may become overwhelmed. It’s important to take time to explore the iSchool website and become familiar with the iSchool Advising and Administration site on Canvas.  The information in the modules is critical for students to review. Make sure to keep up with weekly assignments so that you don’t fall behind. Â
3. What surprises you most about your students?
It’s not really a surprise, but students in the MLIS program possess a wide variety of skills and experiences enabling all of us to learn together and strengthen our community.
4. What advice do you have for students who aren’t sure which pathway they want to pursue?
Begin to read job advertisements to determine those positions that appeal to you, and write down the job requirements. Determine what skills you already possess that meet those requirements — whether they are from academic or professional experiences — and select courses that will provide you with the skills needed for the desired job types. The iSchool Career Resources has resources to prepare you for your career development.  This page lists Job Search strategies and Agencies information.
5. Is there anything else students should know?
Take advantage of the opportunities available in this program. Begin to develop your professional network by joining student and professional organizations, attending webinars, interacting with faculty and students. These are valuable opportunities that will help you to succeed in your career development.Â
Thank you for your insight, Dr. Alman!
