Welcome to the first day of Fall Semester! If you are new, welcome! If you are returning, welcome back. We’d like to introduce this year’s American Library Association Student Chapter Executive Committee, so you can get to know us a bit better. Also, in case you didn’t know, as a student enrolled in SJSU’s MLIS program, you are automatically a member of ALASC. If you are interested in getting involved, please don’t hesitate to contact us at sjsualasc@gmail.com.

Get to Know your Chair, Carlos Bugarin!

What inspired you to get into the library field?

I chose SJSU because of an old college roommate. He mentioned the work and passion his mother has as a library technician in Marin county. As he began listing off his mother’s work and involvement with the community, it aligned point for point with what I was looking for in my future career. He mentioned the ischool at SJSU as a popular program for MLIS degree. As I read about the ischool, the program’s flexibility and focus on emerging technologies had me saying “Yes! This is the program for me.”

Who are your personal heroes?

I look up to my mother, father and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. My parents are embodiments of many of the same traits I hold close: humor, humility, care, etc. Dwayne (we’re on a first name basis apparently) is a badass who continues to give back to his community and family.

Who are your favorite books/authors?

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende, Life of Pi, Paulo Coelho, Junot Diaz

Where is your favorite spot to vacation?

Anywhere outdoors!

What do you do to unwind?

Dance. I dance mexican folkloric dance.

What do you hope to accomplish with your MLIS?

I hope to build my professional leadership management skills and one day run a small independent library in a rural migrant community.
Thanks, Carlos! Looking forward to a great year!
