The ALA is committed to lifting up the voices of those who have been marginalized, and the Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table (GNCRT) of the ALA has been leaning into the issue of diversity in this medium.
At the ALA Virtual conference this summer, the GNCRT hosted a panel session called “A Comics History in the Making,” with BIPOC graphic novel authors Tasha Spillett-Sumner and Malaka Gharib speaking up about moving the library and publishing communities towards greater inclusivity. Read the article about the session at American Libraries magazine online.
GNCRT has also collaborated with the Black Caucus of the ALA (BCALA) to create an extensive Black Lives Matter Comics Reading List. The reading list is neatly divided into children’s, young adult, and adult sections for easy navigation, with links to WorldCat and publisher information for each title. Check out the reading list today on the GNCRT website.
