The American Library Association Student Chapter (ALASC) at San José State University was founded on May 17, 1994, and is the 42nd official student chapter of the ALA. The purpose of ALASC is to foster participation in the American Library Association and use of its publications, scholarships and conferences; to encourage scholarly achievement and professional awareness of national issues in library and information science; to provide a local forum for the exchange of ideas and information about trends, issues, and opportunities in the profession; to provide a supportive environment in which members can share their creativity, teach their skills, offer their experience, direct their expertise, and can learn from each other in a supportive milieu.

SJSU ALASC was the proud recipient of the ALA Chapter of the Year Award for 2009!
2007
SJSU ALASC won the award for Outstanding Educational Program for the Luminary Lecture Series. The program was recognized for its organization, variety of topics, and distribution through YouTube. The presenter also noted the fact that the officers of the organization are distributed throughout the state and the lectures have been viewed by more than 500 people.
