In the mountains of Western Massachusetts you’ll find Smith College whose Special Collections hosts a treasure trove of artifacts pertaining to Women’s history in the United States. As one of the oldest all-female institutions, its three repositories – Smith College Archives, the Sophia Smith Collection of Women’s History, and the Mortimer Rare Book Collection – are uniquely contextualized to tell the story of women in America.
A highlight of the collection is Sylvia Plath’s typewriter as well as an elm plank that was used as her writing desk. While some information has been digitized, most is housed on-site and requires an appointment to see.
