Hi there! I’m Christina Eilar, the 2023-2024 Events Coordinator for the SJSU iSchool’s UX Student Group. Fall 2023 is my third semester in the MLIS program at SJSU.
For me, the MLIS program is a career change. My background is in math and my previous work experience was in instrumentation and remote data collection.
I always loved my local library and decided to make the change after getting more involved there as a volunteer. Public libraries are a unique and precious public resource, and I want to work with libraries expanding resources beyond print media with makerspaces and other kinds of shared resources.
Currently I work for the Art Center College of Design in the Library Department as the Digital Services Specialist. I really enjoy working with the undergraduate and graduate students, and this role is support services, social media promotion, and library IT.
To be honest, I am often not a first adopter of new technology, but I believe in equitable access to technology and public libraries’ role in free and open access to new technologies.
Where I live (and I believe this is true of many cities), the public library is an important access point for some patrons to check their email or fill out online forms. I worked at the help desk of a public library and it was especially satisfying to answer questions about printing resumes, knowing the library helped bridge that gap.
