Hi! I’m Lynn Reeves, one of the co-chairs for the 2023-24 UX Student Group at the SJSU iSchool. I’m in my final year of the MLIS program and excited to serve this club.
My background is in elementary education, but not too long ago I was ready for a career change. I went back to school for a library technician certificate and then to SJSU for the MLIS program. When I took Aaron Schmidt’s INFO 287 User Experience class, something clicked.
As part of that class we had to track the use of a physical library space and I realized whatever job position I have been in I’ve always worked hard to create the best user experience possible, even if I didn’t know it was called UX.
My favorite part of teaching has always been creating a useful and engaging environment for learning. I noticed that my first and second grade students were having trouble navigating the school library and worked with the library assistant to create better signage to help students be more independent when choosing books. I’d often observe how my students used the physical space in the classroom and would adjust the layout of the classroom
to make it better for their learning experience.
My favorite part of my current job as a library technician in a high school is making both the physical and digital experience as user friendly as possible. I’m always looking for ways to improve students’ library experience, from something as small as adding more places to charge devices to larger ideas like redesigning the library website. Creating a useful and beautiful space is how I best fill my library calling.
