REFORMA SJSU Student and Alumni Group

Saludos! Greetings!

Meet our new REFORMA iSchool President!

Hector_headshot (1)

¡Bienvenido Héctor!

Héctor started his MLIS journey at San Jose State University in Fall 2022, and is the current REFORMA-Bibliotecas Para La Gente Rita Torres Scholarship recipient. He was born in México and lived in the states of Veracruz, Oaxaca, Nayarit, and México City. He moved to the US when he was 20 years old with zero English proficiency. After teaching himself English he became a professional Interpreter and Translator for more than 15 years. Héctor obtained an Art History degree from the University of Central Arkansas, and in May 2021 he graduated from the Master of Arts in Art History program from University of Houston.
Last fall he joined the public library world as a Bilingual Community Library Specialist. His primary duties are to serve the Spanish speaking population and Latinx communities in Marin County. Héctor also serves as the Secretary for the REFORMA chapter Blibliotecas Para La Gente, and is also the current Chair for the Marin County Free Library Spanish Services Working Committee.

Hector believes that public librarianship can advance our communities extraordinarily in their capacity because they are free to the public. He is also learning about how libraries function as institutional white spaces. Héctor believes it is necessary to increase visibility and representation in the library by revisiting protocols that discriminate against library users, including patrons and staff, and in programming and collection development. This Fall (2022) Hector is also collaborating with Libraries For the World to open a library in Guatemala. Hector would like to focus his degree on funding a library and cultural center in his hometown in Mexico.
