One of the many interesting presentations was given by David Shumaker, from The Catholic University of America. He was one of the key participants in formulating <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sla.org\/about-sla\/competencies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 2016 Core competencies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for SLA librarians. These competencies are aimed at defining the skills central to work as an \u201cinformation professional.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While their framework looked at both core competencies specific to information professionals and those shared by other fields, I\u2019ve outlined here those competencies specific to information professionals. The six competencies can be found on the SLA website, but what was particularly relevant about this particular presentation was that Shumaker highlighted what the group saw as changing needs for today&#8217;s information world. As we select our course choices, Shumaker&#8217;s list (captured in the bulleted notes below) is a timely\u00a0reminder of what the field is currently viewing as significant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 core competencies:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information and knowledge services<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Includes teaching, training, and developing information literacy and associated skills. (Valerie Gross, the keynote speaker, also emphasized the important intersection of education and the information professional.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the varied aspects of human information behavior.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information and knowledge systems and technology<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designing user interfaces.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coding.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information and knowledge resources<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data&#8211;information&#8211;knowledge.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All types, media, formats, and recordable knowledge in people&#8217;s heads; all levels of data, information, and knowledge.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auditing and mapping assets, both internally and externally, generated at all stages.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information and data retrieval and analysis<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retrieval and analysis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tools for analysis and visualization.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assessing veracity or quality.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organization of data, information and knowledge assets<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metadata, taxonomies, and ontologies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not cataloging.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information Ethics<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issues that commonly emerge in our professions: user and creator rights, privacy vs. the right to know.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relationship to business ethics.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; SJSU put on its spring conference of Library 2.0 on Expertise, Competencies, and Careers, on March 29th.
