{"id":3792,"date":"2024-02-23T03:25:04","date_gmt":"2024-02-23T11:25:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/saasc\/?p=3792"},"modified":"2024-02-23T03:25:04","modified_gmt":"2024-02-23T11:25:04","slug":"advocacy-for-archives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/saasc\/2024\/02\/23\/advocacy-for-archives\/","title":{"rendered":"Advocacy for Archives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 10px;\">This post is written by guest writer, Emily Mizokami<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was all-hands-on-deck at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforsacramentohistory.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Sacramento History<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CSH) last month. All the archivists, the city historian and curator were heading over to city hall and asked me, their student assistant, to tag along. I was surprised when I was told that all city departments were reporting to the city council that day to plead their case for why they should continue receiving their portion of the city\u2019s budgetary pie. Sacramento is $50 million in the hole and the cuts to this year\u2019s budget have to come from somewhere.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3794 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/saasc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-23-at-6.19.55-AM-227x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"157\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/saasc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-23-at-6.19.55-AM-227x300.png 227w, https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/saasc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-23-at-6.19.55-AM.png 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 157px) 100vw, 157px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12px;\">Whether MLIS students go on to work at archives for a city, county, university or museum, at some point they will be part of a team that develops or executes a strategic plan for their institution\u2019s survival. Coincidentally, the SAASC recently hosted Dr. Jessica Bushey , in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ni6UPq1Znuc\">\u201cAsk an Archivist\u201d<\/a> series, who discussed the importance of advocating for archives. Bushey, a San Jose State University professor and former archivist at two museums, stressed that most boards, councils, and donors do not know what archivists do:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12px;\">\u201cI think if there is, you know, one discipline that seems to be oddly misunderstood, it is definitely the discipline of archives,\u201d said Bushey. \u201cI know a lot of archivists who really prefer the quiet work of archives and while I love that, if you&#8217;re the only archivist .\u00a0 .\u00a0 .you\u2019re the only one there to make that plea and to try and get people interested in what you\u2019re doing and then fund you, it\u2019s all about getting funding right?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12px;\">And funding is exactly what every Sacramento City department was vying for in those packed chambers last month. CSH is under the umbrella of Conventions and Cultural Services and this division\u2019s economy manager, Megan Van Voorhis, made the center\u2019s impassioned plea to the council. She spoke with knowledge and passion as she described what CSH does for the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c(CSH) helps us understand why we are here; how we got here,\u201d said Van Voorhis. She detailed the center&#8217;s housing of 30,000 artifacts dating back to 1849, outreach programs such as the yearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.ca.gov\/archives\/public-events\/archives-month\/archives-crawl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Archives Crawl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforsacramentohistory.org\/exhibits\/current-exhibits\/Kids%20Collect\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">programs with the city\u2019s school children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12px;\">\u201cPeople look to museums and historic sites . . . they\u2019re the ones that have the highest levels of trust,\u201d Van Voorhis continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12px;\">The council and spectators appeared to be moved as Van Voorhis received two rounds of applause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12px;\">City councilmember Karina Talamentes who visited CSH previously commented, \u201cIt\u2019s incredible! It\u2019s like Disneyland for anyone that\u2019s into history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12px;\">Vice mayor Caity Maple, who happily anticipates the CSH curator\u2019s frequent rotation of artwork at city hall, added, \u201cI\u2019ve read letters (at CSH) from the city manager in the 1920s . . .and I learned from them. . .because if we don\u2019t know our history, we are doomed to repeat it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12px;\">Not all archives will be lucky enough to have the backing of a staff and well-spoken economy manager who appreciates their institution. That is where a background in marketing, public speaking, or advertising will be beneficial and perhaps the key to securing funding for the ever-elusive archives at which an MLIS student may work, according to Bushey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12px;\">Bushey emphasized, \u201cThe more that you can talk about the archives and archival work and have it linked to the mission and the goals of the larger organization, the more successful you will be.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"><a href=\"mailto:emily.mizokami@sjsu.edu\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-rich-links=\"{&quot;per_n&quot;:&quot;Emily Mizokami&quot;,&quot;per_e&quot;:&quot;emily.mizokami@sjsu.edu&quot;,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;person&quot;}\">Emily Mizokami<\/span><\/i><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is in her first year as an MLIS student at San Jose State University and works part time at the Center for Sacramento History.
