SUMMARY:Future of Librarianship: What It Means to Be an Information Professional Today
DESCRIPTION:About\nDr. Sandra Hirsh will share her insights on the future of librarianship and what it means to be an information professional today. Drawing from her recent observations from writing the 3rd Edition of her textbook Information Services Today: An Introduction (published mid-March 2022)\, Hirsh will highlight some of the most significant trends that will impact the work of information professionals for years to come as well as the key competencies and skills that will help information professionals successfully serve their communities while also building successful and rewarding careers. \nInformation professionals have increasingly taken on a greater and more responsive role in the sustainability and resiliency of the communities they serve. This was particularly evident during the pandemic when information professionals adapted and prioritized how they provided information services and resources to address the social\, educational\, and economic challenges that their communities were experiencing. These shifts demonstrate the evolving landscape of information services and the importance for information professionals to continuously engage in competency training\, professional development\, and lifelong learning. \nBIO\n\nDr. Sandra Hirsh is Associate Dean for Academics in the College of Professional and Global Education at San José State University (SJSU). She previously served as Professor and Director of the SJSU School of Information for ten years. She is immediate Past President of the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) and has also served previously as President of the Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T). She co-founded and co-chairs the global virtual Library 2.0 conference series (https://www.library20.com/). The third edition of her textbook – Information Services Today: An Introduction – will be published in March 2022 by Rowman & Littlefield. She holds both a bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. from UCLA and a MLIS degree from the University of Michigan.
