SUMMARY:From Digital Library to Digital Archive: Implementing Digital Preservation Efforts
DESCRIPTION:The University of Southern Mississippi has been digitizing materials for almost two decades. Similar to other institutions\, backups were considered “preservation” of digital objects. In 2013\, we started learning what was really required to preserve our data. We slowly started testing methods\, proving validity of tools\, and implementing improvements – all with minuscule resources. After demonstrating years of data\, projections for the future\, and calculating the true cost – including staffing resources and time – we transitioned to a robust digital preservation system. Our journey from digital library to digital archive is not unusual and can be replicated. This session will outline the differences between a digital library and a digital archive and simple changes that can be made to get started with digital preservation. Using the University of Southern Mississippi as a case study\, this session will cover digital preservation basics from identifying needs to tool selection\, from piecemeal efforts to implementing a full digital preservation system. If Mississippi can do it\, you can too. \nWebinar sponsored by SIG DL: http://www.asis.org/SIG/sigdl/ \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nPresenter\nElizabeth La Beaud is the Digital Lab Manager for the University of Southern Mississippi’s Digital Collections. She holds a MLIS\, a certificate in Archives and Special Collections\, the Digital Archives Specialist certificate from the Society of American Archivists and is a Library of Congress trained Digital Preservation Topical Trainer. Elizabeth specializes in digital preservation\, project planning and implementation\, and copyright as it pertains to digital collections. \n\nFree to ASIS&T members. SUMMARY:Me4MAP: A Method for the Development of Metadata Application Profiles
DESCRIPTION:A metadata application profile (MAP) is a construct that provides a semantic model to publish data in the Web of Data. This semantic model is no more than a data model with the definition of proper-ties and its constraints. Each property is defined through a RDF vocabulary term\, with the defini-tion of domain and range\, and cardinality for each term. According to the DCMI document “In-teroperability Levels for Dublin Core Metadata”\, a MAP is a construct that enhances semantic in-teroperability. This means that when a community of practice agrees to follow a MAP’s set of rules for publishing data as Linked Open Data\, this makes it possible for such data published the LOD cloud to be processed automatically by software agents. \nA MAP is therefore a construct of great importance and the existence of a method for its develop-ment is essential to give MAP developers a common ground on which to work. The absence of such a method leads to a non-systematic set of MAP development activities that might result in MAPs with less quality. \nThis Webinar will present Me4MAP\, a method for the development of metadata application pro-files. Me4MAP was defined in the context of a PhD and is still now being tested and refined. It is a method that is approached through a software engineering perspective. With Me4MAP\, we do not propose a universal solution; rather\, our intention is to establish a starting point for the study and design of methods for the development of MAPs. \nThis webinar will also be presented in Portuguese on May 31\, 2017. \nWebinar sponsored by DCMI: http://dublincore.org/ \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nPresenter\nMariana Curado Malta\nMariana Curado Malta is an Associate Professor at Polythecnic of Oporto\, Portugal and a researcher in CEOS.PP\, Portugal. Currently\, she is on leave in the Laboratorio de Inovación en Humanidades Digitales in the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia in Madrid\, Spain. Her research work is framed in a project (POSTDATA)\, financed by a European Research Council Starting Grant that aims to publish poetry data (and related data) as Linked Open Data. In POSTDATA she is responsible for the semantic modelling. Her research interests are related to methods for the development of metadata application profiles and the quality of MAPs in particular and metadata in general. She is the co-author of Me4MAP\, a method for the development of metadata application profiles. Mariana Curado Malta has a PhD in Technologies and Information Systems from University of Minho\, Portugal. She is the author of several research papers\, book chapters\, and recently co-edited the book “Developing metadata application profiles” published by IGI Global. SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Digital Preservation Metadata for Practitioners – Implementing PREMIS
DESCRIPTION:This book begins with an introduction to fundamental issues related to digital preservation metadata before proceeding to in-depth coverage of issues concerning its practical use and implementation. It helps readers to understand which options need to be considered in specifying a digital preservation metadata profile to ensure it matches their individual content types\, technical infrastructure\, and organizational needs. Further\, it provides practical guidance and examples\, and raises important questions. It does not provide full-fledged implementation solutions\, as such solutions can\, by definition\, only be specific to a given preservation context. As such\, the book effectively bridges the gap between the formal specifications provided in a standard\, such as the PREMIS Data Dictionary – a de-facto standard that defines the core metadata required by most preservation repositories – and specific implementations. \nAnybody who needs to manage digital assets in any form with the intent of preserving them for an indefinite period of time will find this book a valuable resource. The PREMIS Data Dictionary provides a data model consisting of basic entities (objects\, agents\, events and rights) and basic properties (called “semantic units”) that describe them. The key challenge addressed is that of determining which information one needs to keep\, together with one’s digital assets\, so that they can be understood and used in the long-term – in other words\, exactly which metadata one needs. \nThe book will greatly benefit beginners and current practitioners alike. It is equally targeted at digital preservation repository managers and metadata analysts who are responsible for digital preservation metadata\, as it is at students in Library\, Information and Archival Science degree programs or related fields. Further\, it can be used at the conception stage of a digital preservation system or for self-auditing an existing system. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nAbout the Authors\nAngela Dappert \nAngela Dappert works at the British Library and serves on the PREMIS Editorial Committee. She has been involved with the modeling of digital preservation metadata for over a decade. She has worked on persistent identification for researchers and research output\, data carrier stabilization\, digital asset registration\, preservation planning and characterization\, eJournal ingest\, and digital metadata standards. She has consulted on digital life-cycle management issues for a wide range of institutions. \nRebecca Squire Guenther\n \nRebecca Squire Guenther worked in US national libraries for 35 years\, primarily on library technology standards related to digital libraries. She spent most of her professional life at the Library of Congress developing national and international standards related to metadata\, including MARC\, MODS\, PREMIS\, METS\, BIBFRAME and ISO language codes. She has served on numerous standards and implementation committees\, several as chair\, including the PREMIS Editorial Committee and the original PREMIS Working Group. She is an adjunct professor in NYU’s Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program and consults on metadata issues for various cultural heritage organizations. \nSébastien Peyrard\n \nSébastien Peyrard has been working for 8 years at the National Library of France (BnF) where he is currently head of metadata engineering services. He has worked in various metadata related projects such as the implementation of preservation metadata in SPAR\, the institution digital preservation repository\, and the data.bnf.fr linked data project. He is also responsible for maintaining the ARK persistent identifier implementation at BnF. He served on the METS Editorial Board from 2011 to 2013 and on the PREMIS Editorial Committee from 2011 to 2015. \nFree to ASIS&T members.
