SUMMARY:Meet the Authors: Top Trends and Tips in LIS Research
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Authors of the New LIS Research Methods Book!\nLynn Silipigni Connaway and Marie L. Radford Discuss Top Trends and Tips in LIS Research\nThe new edition of Research Methods in Library and Information Science is a practical and comprehensive introduction to research design\, presenting up-to-date coverage of the principles and data collection techniques for quantitative and qualitative research methods — along with the advantages and disadvantages of each. The new edition includes added sections featuring the voices of prominent LIS scholars\, researchers\, and editors.  “Voices of the Experts” text boxes provide researchers’ advice on specific methods and identify the most important or most valuable reasons for using a particular method and software for analysis—such as NVivo\, SurveyMonkey\, and log capture. \nCo-authors\, Lynn Silipigni Connaway and Marie L. Radford\, provide a foundation of research practice and process for library and information science researchers\, students and professionals. The book includes instruction on conducting research using an array of tools as well as guidance in critically reading and evaluating research publications\, proposals\, and reports. Connaway and Radford will review top trends and tips for LIS research\, to highlight some of the book’s comprehensive coverage of what is new and exciting for beginning scholars as well as those wishing to learn about current trends. \nOrder your copy of Research Methods in Library and Information Science and receive a 30% discount! \nModerator:  Joseph Janes\, Associate Professor at the iSchool at the University of Washington\, and author of the forthcoming book Documents-That-Changed-the-Way-We-Live \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nThis event is free to ASIS&T members. SUMMARY:From MARC Silos to Linked Data silos?
DESCRIPTION:From MARC Silos to Linked Data Silos? Data Models for Bibliographic Linked Data\nMany libraries are experimenting with publishing their metadata as Linked Data to open up bibliographic silos\, usually based on MARC records\, to the Web. The libraries who have published Linked Data have all used different data models for structuring their bibliographic data. Some are using a FRBR-based model where Works\, Expressions and Manifestations are represented separately. Others have chosen basic Dublin Core\, dumbing down their data into a lowest common denominator format. The proliferation of data models limits the reusability of bibliographic data. In effect\, libraries have moved from MARC silos to Linked Data silos of incompatible data models. There is currently no universal model for how to represent bibliographic metadata as Linked Data\, even though many attempts for such a model have been made. \nIn this webinar\, you’ll see: \n\na survey of published bibliographic Linked Data\, the data models proposed for representing bibliographic data as RDF\, and tools used for conversion from MARC records\nan analysis of different use cases for bibliographic Linked Data and how they affect the data model\nrecommendations for choosing a data model\n\nWe also present efforts at the National Library of Finland to open up our bibliographic metadata\, including the national bibliography Fennica\, the national discography Viola and the article database Arto\, as Linked Data while trying to learn from the examples of others. We are setting up a conversion process from MARC records to BIBFRAME and Schema.org compliant RDF\, which we are going to publish as Linked Data using various technologies including a SPARQL endpoint\, HDT compressed RDF dumps and a Linked Data Fragments API. \nThis webinar is an extended\, in-depth version of the SWIB16 conference presentation ”From MARC silos to Linked Data silos?” \nParticipant Experience Level: Basic familiarity of bibliographic metadata and Linked Data assumed \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nFree to ASIS&T members.
