New students have a few options to join organizations, including many diverse options like <a href=\"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/reforma\/\">REFORMA<\/a> and Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (<a href=\"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/aanhpi\/\">AANHPI<\/a>). Representation within your community is vital, and Black Student Library Collective is SJSU\u2019s answer to representation within your community, and also to those who want to learn more about black culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Chow writes, \u201cThe SJSU iSchool is #1 in the nation for the total number of Black\/African American MLIS students (104 of 847 students nationally) and national percentage (12.3% of all Black\/AA MLIS students nationally).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Black Student Collective is a new, undeveloped student group looking for prospective student leaders who want to be a part of a new student group. You won\u2019t be doing this alone though, and ALASC, as well as other student organizations, can provide assistance to help get this organization off the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Mission of the BSLC at San Jos\u00e9 State is to champion the creation and advancement of library outreach and resources that cater specifically to the needs and interests of those from the African Diaspora. We aim to do the following: educate, inspire, and empower our members and the iSchool community through workshops and speaker series; provide a platform for Black voices in librarianship in allied professions to be heard; and create inclusive spaces that foster engagement, dialogue, and learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joining the BSLC offers a unique opportunity to be part of a movement passionate about making a difference.
