This month\u2019s dedication was originated by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who organized the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asalh.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASALH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in 1915.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This month aligns with the birthdays of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advancementproject.org\/9-greatest-frederick-douglass-quotes\/#:~:text=%237%20%E2%80%9CThe%20white%20man's%20happiness,whirlwind%2C%20and%20the%20earthquake.%E2%80%9D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frederick Douglass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/black-lives-certainly-mattered-abraham-lincoln-180976963\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abraham Lincoln<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* &#8211; which is the reason why this month was chosen for Black History Month. Both of these men are renowned for contributing to the abolitionist movement as well as for being literary\/political figures in their own right. Through their life\u2019s work, these men contributed paramount, rhetorical texts and speeches to counter the horrific rationales that were used by pro-slavery individuals and institutions that were the dominant systems of power of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5637 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"826\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/1.jpg 826w, https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/1-300x135.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/1-768x346.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 826px) 100vw, 826px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By proposing \u201cradical\u201d ideas that called for the emancipation of slavery and the rights of those enslaved, abolitionist thinkers were able to start a social and political movement. These movements led to the cessation of slavery and further sparked the beginning of further civil rights movements. As we now know, the fight is all but over. And so this month, by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/culture\/there-are-plenty-of-ways-to-celebrate-black-history-month-heres-a-few\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celebrating <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the advancement towards true equality in America, we can look forward to brighter horizons for all marginalized communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By dedicating February to the recognition, remembrance, and appreciation of the hard work that pivotal individuals contributed to the equality of African American communities, we share powerful information, great for becoming allies in the fight for equality, ourselves!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Librarians and our libraries play an important role in the enthusiastic sharing of writers, agencies, resources, quotes, art, and more, that uplift the fight for equality and move steadily towards the reparations that are still needed for racial and social justice.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/James-Baldwin-600x600-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5638 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/James-Baldwin-600x600-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"791\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/James-Baldwin-600x600-1.jpg 791w, https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/James-Baldwin-600x600-1-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/James-Baldwin-600x600-1-768x374.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hope you\u2019ll join ALASC in appreciating some of our favorite Black History Month-related resources, found below!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Emily Espanol&#8217;s new favorite library website,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/programminglibrarian.org\/\"><em>Programming Librarian<\/em><\/a>, features an <a href=\"https:\/\/programminglibrarian.org\/articles\/black-history-month-resource-round\">amazing collection<\/a> of resources to use in your library!<\/p>\n<p>Samantha Harteau, who works primarily in the youth section of her library, recommends books for young readers by various authors, such as: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vashtiharrison.com\/books\">Vashti Harrison<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/tamiwrites.com\/books\">Tami Charles<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ladygracebyers.com\/books\">Grace Byers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rodaworld.com\/\">Roda Ahmed<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/authors\/2195235\/nathan-bryon\/\">Nathan Bryon<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn more about the aforementioned founder of Black History Month, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naacp.org\/find-resources\/history-explained\/civil-rights-leaders\/carter-g-woodson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Woodson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who himself had an incredibly inspiring life!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For information about the Harlem Renaissance from a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/collections\/145704\/an-introduction-to-the-harlem-renaissance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poetry-focused angle.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adorable <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children\u2019s titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Activist-Innosanto-Nagara\/dp\/1609805399\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A is for Activist<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to visually and poetically inspire the budding activist in your little ones!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive-video-wrap clr\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Crash Course Black American History Preview\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xPx5aRuWCtc?list=PL8dPuuaLjXtNYJO8JWpXO2JP0ezgxsrJJ\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
