{"id":5477,"date":"2022-11-30T08:00:08","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T16:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/?p=5477"},"modified":"2022-11-28T19:57:30","modified_gmt":"2022-11-29T03:57:30","slug":"self-advocacy-reflections-on-this-semesters-theme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/self-advocacy-reflections-on-this-semesters-theme\/","title":{"rendered":"Self-Advocacy: Reflections on Our Fall 2022 theme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>After a semester of conversations around self-advocacy, our Fall 2022 SJSU ALASC Chair Rachel Fleming reflected on all the events and conversations that she and the ALASC executive team had participated in.<\/em><\/p>\n<h1><b>Self-Advocacy: Why &amp; How\u00a0<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally everyone should have a seat at the table, but realistically many people have to <\/span><b>ask<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a seat. In all probability many had to campaign and possibly fight a bloody ruthless battle to attain a seat at the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an ideal world you don\u2019t need self advocacy skills because you have co-workers, a boss, a director and a system that advocates for you. Some have worked in a library for years, while others are switching to a new career. These students are creative, smart and passionate about the LIS world. What I don\u2019t see is a lot of\u00a0 boisterous, debate-loving students shouting, \u201cLet&#8217;s go out into the world and show everyone who we are and what we do!\u201d and unfortunately, we need more loudmouths to compete with the endless noise of our information universe. Librarians are bent under the weight of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inthelibrarywiththeleadpipe.org\/2018\/vocational-awe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vocational awe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/annehelen.substack.com\/p\/the-librarians-are-not-okay\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">librarianship as a care-work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> burnout, which is now a prevalent topic of conversation. In an age of constant online stimulation and massive million dollar marketing campaigns with information booming, the world of libraries grows smaller when they should be getting bigger and more relevant. People say, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Libraries still exist? Why? We have Google, we don&#8217;t need libraries!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2017\/06\/21\/millennials-are-the-most-likely-generation-of-americans-to-use-public-libraries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> millennials use libraries more than the previous generation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edsource.org\/updates\/california-has-the-lowest-literacy-rate-of-any-state-data-suggests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California has the lowest literacy rates in the nation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and states that have<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theedadvocate.org\/the-calamity-of-the-disappearing-school-libraries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> defunded K-12 teacher librarians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are starting to see negative ripple effects and information illiterate adults. The world of information has become so vast it overwhelms the average consumer who now more than ever needs a trusted librarian to guide them through the deluge. Information literacy classes and programs should be soaring! Marketing librarians as community mentors and fact checking wizards should be the norm! And yet\u2026.crickets\u2026.defunding\u2026.libraries labeled as outdated and unnecessary\u2026..<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We must develop our voice and add volume and validity to our message because the next generation of librarians will need to advocate for themselves and for their place in the information world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HOW do you advocate for yourself? What must you do?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short answer?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You fail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You try again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You ask for help, feedback and support from friends and you try again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You utilize every tool, technology, connection, and opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You build your self advocacy muscles slowly over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Your toolbox<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5483\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5483\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Semester-Wrap-Up-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5483\" src=\"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Semester-Wrap-Up-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"An image of coworkers and friends stacking their hands up in a huddle. At its foundation you need to believe in yourself and your work product and know that what you offer the world is an essential service that makes the world better. As Dr. Uila Gosart mentioned in her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Pzi168FApJc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talk on self advocacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you need to know what is meaningful to you and understand the indivisible self.\u00a0 Standing on this self-belief and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-awareness, we build outward. We have to ask for what we want and take practical steps towards the future we deserve. Listen to the voice inside that says \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I deserve that job!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d And say to that voice, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great, now let&#8217;s take the steps to go and get it!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So HOW do you go about doing this, where do you start? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be organized! You are a MLIS student, you&#8217;re learning all about organization and structures. You must make a system and a roadmap that works for you. These are the 10 steps I have developed in my MLIS journey:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Know yourself &amp; your community<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, your strengths, values, and what your career goals are specifically. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You cannot ask for what you want\/deserve if you don\u2019t know specifically what that is.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Do your own self evaluation and inventory- Dr. Gosart\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Pzi168FApJc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notions of the Self<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What are your long term career goals? Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten years? What skills can you be working on now to make yourself a more appealing candidate? What skills do you have that are transferable? What skills and services are you currently bringing to the table and are you being fairly compensated for them?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Know your rights.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Legal information can be daunting, but at the very least you need to know what your state and local laws are on employee rights.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Know what you\u2019re up against.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fighting an unseen force is difficult. It helps to identify what the issue is: systematic barriers, pay gaps, microaggressions, closed doors, gaslighting, lack of transparency. Once you have identified what the biggest barrier is, you can take steps to overcome it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cultivate support: You are not alone!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Realize you have allies who will help you and want you to succeed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work to develop direct lines of communication with people in positions of power who could advocate for you or with you. B<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e an ally and advocate for others.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognize that some managers or leaders would love to help, but need you to help motivate, galvanize and bring values into action.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Do your own research<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on an industry, on other\u2019s expectations and goals, and pitch yourself. Write out a script, practice it on your pet, significant other or a video on your phone. Practice and revise.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Work on your assertive communication. <\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Develop scripts and narratives you can utilize in different scenarios.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn to say, \u201cRespectfully I disagree.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn how to appeal\u00a0 decisions and creatively problem solve. No one wants to hear a list of complaints without a proposed solution and a respectful organized stated case. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get information and decisions in writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always be respectful, direct and stand firm on the principles of what you are voicing. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognize and work with non-verbal cues and other\u2019s unspoken expectations. .<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognize that while something might feel intentional and hurtful, the truth is that many people are cruel in their ignorance -or lack of education on a topic, not out of maliciousness, and if presented with an alternative might be happy to embrace your request.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Build a<\/b> <b>network<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; I know, most of you hate it! But it is essential!<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteer to join a student organization like ALASC.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteer at an institution you would like to work at!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold call\/email local libraries and LIS organizations you\u2019d like to be a part of and ask to do a shadow day with someone.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk with people in the field. If you want a promotion at a place you currently work, let people know you want it! If you would like to work at an organization, tell them! People can\u2019t read your mind, and unless you have vocalized what you want, you diminish the possibility that someone could help you. Ask about internships, entry level jobs, suggest the possibility they could make a new position based on a need and express your interest! Ask about job opportunities!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to local conferences and connect with local chapters of library organizations: ALA, CLA, SLA, ACRL. Meet like minded folks, the world itself is small, once you get in and meet a few people, you\u2019ll start to meet them all!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submit proposals to present at local and national library conferences.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have one-on-ones with people in the industry and get their advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Build an online presence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep records of everything! Document your successes, and publish them so that others can see what you have already done.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m just starting to build my own little website. \u2018Google Sites\u2019 is FREE and I have an old domain I attached: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rachelfleming.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.rachelfleming.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use LinkedIn\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow as many LIS-related accounts as you can\u2013this includes dream organizations you would love to work for (NARA! The American Film Institute! Internet Archive!), professional organizations (e.g., ALA, CLA, IFLA), and library superstars!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep your profile up-to-date: try to update your LinkedIn profile at the end of every semester. Don\u2019t forget to add your MLIS courses, volunteer work, LIS skills, and relevant projects!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interact as often as you can\u2013 liking, commenting, and following are all great ways to show your professional activity and networking skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out the recording for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vCb94OTELlo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALASC Rock Your Profile Workshop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Ryan Zervakos from LinkedIn to learn top tips for optimizing your LinkedIn profile!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have an online portfolio to demonstrate your skills rather than just list them out.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letters of Recommendation: from bosses, supervisors, teachers, even a respected friend who has a great job title.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visit the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjsu.edu\/careercenter\/students\/grad-students.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SJSU Career Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for free assistance in building your resume.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Don\u2019t be discouraged<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by failure and rejection. A closed door, a \u201csorry we\u2019re not interested\u201d is still a success BECAUSE YOU TRIED and that means you\u2019re building that self advocacy muscle! Each time you attempt to network, you ask about a job opportunity, you submit a proposal, you go to the gym for your self advocacy muscles and the more you work them out, the stronger and better you\u2019ll be at it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Be a willing educator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Realize that while it might not be ideal, you have to be willing to educate others about issues. Ideally everyone would take the time to educate themselves and do their own research, but in the real world often this isn\u2019t happening. However, we will need to ask (and possibly fight) for that place. We will need to advocate for our place individually, for our coworkers, and for our institutions. In doing so we empower ourselves and others, by setting boundaries and taking control we can creatively and effectively problem solve and\u00a0 build safe inclusive environments. We are the next generation of librarians, we will need to stand on our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion with loud voices, strong hearts and steadfast action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Thanks to all of our members for going on this journey with us all semester.
