{"id":5434,"date":"2022-11-09T16:40:21","date_gmt":"2022-11-10T00:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/?p=5434"},"modified":"2023-02-28T17:12:28","modified_gmt":"2023-03-01T01:12:28","slug":"did-you-miss-our-evening-with-dr-ulia-gosart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/did-you-miss-our-evening-with-dr-ulia-gosart\/","title":{"rendered":"Did You Miss Our Evening with Dr. Ulia Gosart?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Self Advocacy with Dr. Ulia Gosart<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On November 3, 2022, ALASC virtually hosted iSchool Assistant Professor, Dr. Ulia Gosart, for a night to reflect on the semester\u2019s theme of<\/span><b> self-advocacy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To begin, however, the attendees had to decide how they would define the idea of self-advocacy as a temporary learning community. Definitions were offered anonymously through a Padlet and included \u201cspeaking out\u201d and \u201cbelieving in yourself enough to ask for more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diving into her speech, Dr. Gosart noted one that stuck out to her: <\/span><b>\u201cstanding up for yourself.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She reflected, \u201cStanding up yourself takes multiple components of who you are\u2026What do I mean by my own self? You will have multiple answers. I\u2019m a mother, I\u2019m a student, I\u2019m a friend, I might be in love, I might be enabled, I might be sitting in this room at this particular time and this particular place, and I\u2019m just <\/span><b>situated in the specific contexts <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that make me feel good or bad\u2026 There are many contextual components of self that are continuously changing and continuously actually shape who we are, and how we move through our reality, how we see that reality, how we define the self, and how to act upon it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self advocacy is a creative process as much as it is an action. Dr. Gosart mused that one of the core components of standing up for yourself is being able to adapt to change without compromising a non-negotiable part of the self.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch the rest of <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Pzi168FApJc\">Dr. Gosart&#8217;s enlightening talk about self-advocacy<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and hear more about her journey in libraries and advocacy, starting in 1999 in Kosova.
