{"id":5220,"date":"2022-06-06T08:00:42","date_gmt":"2022-06-06T15:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/?p=5220"},"modified":"2022-06-05T22:05:23","modified_gmt":"2022-06-06T05:05:23","slug":"hello-summer-library-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ischoolgroups.sjsu.edu\/alasc\/wp-students\/hello-summer-library-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Hello Summer Library Programs!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools are out, splash pads are on, and community libraries everywhere are launching their summer reading programs!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.ala.org\/summer-reading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, summer reading programs began in the 1890s to develop the habit of reading and to forestall the \u201csummer slide\u201d in school children. Engaging urban youth was important to lessen the impact of economic disparity, which has only increased in the century since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that doesn\u2019t mean summer reading shouldn\u2019t be fun!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To draw crowds back into the library this summer, iSchool colleagues are organizing amazing events, scheduling circus performers, and raising awareness about their libraries\u2019 offerings, like tween book clubs and coding classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no small feat. Youth services staff member and iSchool student, Beth Krebs-Smith, has been planning her program for months in a table, tracking dates, supplies, and what still needs to be done. By mid-may, Beth happily reported that all her activities were planned out on the calendar, with details to be determined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, in San Diego, librarian and iSchool alum, Carrie, Sanabria has fun weekly performers booked out all summer until August. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/missionhillslibrary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her branch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be inviting magicians, ventriloquists, musicians, and wildlife presenters, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiego.librarymarket.com\/event\/zovargo-presents-animals-and-us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zovargo\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> live animal ambassadors who will be bringing five animal friends (both scaly AND feathered!) to teach children about the conservation of animals, their habitats, and sustainable behaviors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To bring it home to my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lvccld.org\/summerchallenge\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local public library system in Las Vegas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I\u2019m happy to say that we just had a series of successful kickoff events! Eight branches across the valley conducted three summer challenge celebrations aimed at different age groups in their communities. Participants young and old were invited to win prizes while keeping their skills sharp all summer. As is the case with many other libraries, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lvccld.beanstack.org\/reader365\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beanstack <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been a lifesaver when it comes to logging challenge activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the mercury rising, make sure to visit your local library and find something to enjoy before you settle in beside the pool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay cool, and let me know what you\u2019ll be getting up to in your libraries!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">~Emily<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Schools are out, splash pads are on, and community libraries everywhere are launching their summer reading programs!
