Oh! How about that other student\u2019s proposal for a library escape room to promote information literacy? You <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loved <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s just a shame that most of those student projects just get shuffled into an e-Portfolio and forgotten about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other student projects, however, are back in the spotlight thanks to student conferences, like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjsu.edu\/cpgestudentconference\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CPGE Online Student Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which begins its live sessions tomorrow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it can be easy to just finish a research project, take the grade, and forget the whole stressful experience, reimagining much-loved work for a conference can be emotionally rewarding and professionally beneficial. Best of all\u2013 conference organizers are on your side!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Your Schoolwork\u2019s Second Life<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the CPGE Online Student Conference, Charlene Brewer dusted off that library escape room project from Fall 2019. \u201cThis is a project of which I am particularly proud, especially of how it all came together,\u201d she admits. \u201cThe class [INFO 287 Gamifying Information] was a lot of work, demanding exacting attention to detailed learning theory practices, and I think that is reflected in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjsu.edu\/cpgestudentconference\/information-explorer-room-escape-gamified-information-proposal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the presentation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Soraya Andriamiarisoa\u2019s professor for INFO 282 Sustainability in Library Management, Dr. Kimberli Buckley, encouraged her to submit her project on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjsu.edu\/cpgestudentconference\/the-power-of-cosplay-as-a-sustainability-initiative-for-libraries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Power of Cosplay as a Sustainability Initiative for Libraries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as she was preparing another presentation for her field of study, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Space Librarianship<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at ACRL&#8217;s Virtual World Interest Group (Association of College and Research Libraries).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides getting a second round of applause in lieu of another A+, showing off your research at a conference is also extremely beneficial, especially if you\u2019re considering academic or law librarianship or even Competency M (to demonstrate professional leadership and communication skills).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Professionally Speaking\u2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though research experience is expected of MLIS graduates, proof goes a long way on a resume or CV. According to the iSchool\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ischool.sjsu.edu\/sites\/main\/files\/file-attachments\/career_trends.pdf?1623169156#page=6\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MLIS Skills at Work <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, employers are seeking candidates with the ability to \u201cgather, appraise, organize, analyze, and disseminate information in a smart, concise, and digestible way.\u201d In the same report, these core research skills are listed as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ischool.sjsu.edu\/sites\/main\/files\/file-attachments\/career_trends.pdf?1623169156#page=12\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most in-demand LIS skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, alongside instruction &amp; training and computer &amp; technology skills, all of which are covered in an online conference presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could even buff up for Competency H, as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andriamiarisoa did. Walking me through her process, she notes, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presentation itself was created in Powerpoint. The actual prototype is housed in a virtual world platform called Second Life, which wouldn&#8217;t be possible without Bethany Winslow (Director of Online Learning), who runs VCARA as well, introducing me to the endless possibilities of VWs!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not to mention, it\u2019s easy to do! For her presentation, Brewer attests, \u201cI already designed the Prezi [for class] but I had never actually \u2018presented\u2019 it\u2026 It seemed like a fairly easy thing to come up with a short video presentation to go with it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Conference Organizers Are Your Friends<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While calls for submissions often read as impersonal and daunting, the people viewing your submissions are often on your side. Among the organizers for the CPGE Online Student Conference, catch familiar names such as ALASC\u2019s Events Organizer Kelli Roisman and noted alumna <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ischoolconvocation.sjsu.edu\/2021\/speaker\/student-speaker\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samantha Hamilton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was in fact my INFO 203 student mentor last spring (Hi, Samantha!).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal for the CPGE Online Student Conference in particular is to connect students across the college and promote student work. For the upcoming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/sjsu.edu\/sjsugradslam2021\/home?authuser=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SJSU Grad Slam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other student conferences, the same keywords crop up in their mission statements: celebrate, promote, showcase.
