Between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lgbtq-book-bans-91b2d4c086eb082cbecfdda2800ef29a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">book challenges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/education\/2023\/03\/17\/florida-school-library-controversy-teachers-sue-desantis-government\/11491268002\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">censorship laws<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, teacher librarians have had a lot to deal with \u2013 both in their schools and online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, California has its own unique challenges. As one of the most progressive and wealthy states, it would be easy to assume that we would lead the way in school libraries<span>\u2014<\/span> but unfortunately, this is far from the case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libslide.org\/pubs\/Perspectives-State-Perspective.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of fifty states,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> California remains in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edsource.org\/2022\/where-are-all-the-school-librarians\/670164\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last place<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when it comes to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ca.gov\/ci\/cr\/lb\/schoollibrstats08.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the student-to-teacher librarian ratio of 1 to 7,182 in 2015.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This means that in many districts and counties, students go underrepresented or simply unrepresented at all by a qualified teacher librarian<span>\u2014<\/span>and in some cases, can mean they go without access to school libraries at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is a Teacher Librarian?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every state has its own qualifications for school librarians. In California, teacher librarians are specially trained thanks to obtaining a Master\u2019s in Library and Information Science and a Teaching Credential to work with their schools to develop early literacy programs, and provide instruction in information and media literacy, including developing skills to evaluate sources to distinguish information from misinformation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In model school libraries (in an ideal world), teacher librarians also work with library aides to better serve their K-12 community. Unfortunately, many California schools do not have fully-staffed or well-funded school libraries, leading to gaps across the state and inequity. Thankfully, there\u2019s a proposed solution: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1eslR-WbHJXTXn7einvsS4g3WY_67ptaQbE-j3_akweM\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AB 535: A Library Lead Agency.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is a Library Lead?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Library Lead Agency would involve placing an expert in school libraries within the system of support and accountability in the education budget process in the California legislature. Instituting a Statewide Library Lead would grant California a government representative to fight for equity in school libraries<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Library Lead Agency will be the first step towards building up California\u2019s school library system and eliminating inequities in school library resources and staffing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first hearing for this bill is soon, on <\/span><b>March 29th, 2023.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Education Committee, which is built up of seven California Assemblymembers\/representatives will meet to see first if there has been enough interest in pursuing this bill further.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every social media post, email, letter, and phone call counts as a tally in support of this and backs the future of school libraries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it passes this round, there will be an even greater chance of it passing into law.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><strong>What Can I Do?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you live in California, the most important thing you can do is contact your representatives, especially if they are within the current Education Committee. We have worked together with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/csla.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California School Library Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1eslR-WbHJXTXn7einvsS4g3WY_67ptaQbE-j3_akweM\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">create some scripts and materials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you can use to contact them and get the word out further.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, it&#8217;s as easy as 1, 2, 3:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find your representative.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1uJD0_Jrhd3YWOPx5Vu6pDtsl6RsbqPqkX8xebxmpsRo\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compare against the representatives listed on the Education Committee.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/14IHikl3iF-49-YjOo26P59I5uwmBHAirVWA__xa3ZZE\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use one of our email scripts to contact any\/all representatives on the list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you\u2019re their constituent (in which case, let them know!). Even if you\u2019re not, contact them anyway.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have done the work to help create <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/14IHikl3iF-49-YjOo26P59I5uwmBHAirVWA__xa3ZZE\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter and social media templates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for you, so all you need to do is tailor the letter to how you see fit, put in their email\/username, sign, and hit send.
