Drs. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ischoolapps.sjsu.edu\/facultypages\/view.php?fac=chowa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Chow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simmons.edu\/academics\/faculty\/sanda-erdelez\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanda Erdelez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> introduced the event by sharing how they got involved with school library advocacy, focusing the discussion on equity for students and the changing expectations for school librarians. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keynote Speaker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/keithcurrylance.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keith Curry-Lance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shared resources and data from his research study, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/libslide.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SLIDE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which showed incredible gaps in library staffing that leave 30% of schools with no teacher librarian, impacting 7.5 million students nationwide. While often lack of funding is given as a reason for not staffing libraries, Lance reports that it is not a funding issue, but the ways districts prioritize other staff positions that leave schools without librarians. Keynote Speaker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/childrens\/childrens-industry-news\/article\/89709-q-a-with-aasl-president-kathy-lester.html#:~:text=Kathy%20Lester.,Washington%2C%20D.C.%20on%20June%2028.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathy Lester<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, past AASL president, continued the focus on equity and the importance of sustained advocacy efforts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the summit, the chat was active with library leaders from across the United States and around the world, as people posed questions about the changing role of school librarians, partnerships with public and school libraries, library standards, and many other topics, as well as shared resources and their own experiences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first panel discussion featured <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sc.edu\/study\/colleges_schools\/cic\/faculty-staff\/gavigan_karen.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karen Gavigan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sc.edu\/study\/colleges_schools\/cic\/academic_programs\/phd\/library_and_information_science_phd\/phd_students\/johnson_cynthia.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cynthia Richardson Johnson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdcoe.net\/educators\/library-media-services\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jonathan Hunt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> addressing the question of how to empower school librarians to create excellent library programs. Hunt asked advocates to focus on universal outcomes of strong library programs: literacy, learning, and leadership, that anyone in education can agree with. Johnson emphasized how relationships with teachers, administrators, and the community can change perceptions about what school librarians are and what a library can be. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second panel included <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/aboutala\/presidents-page\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lessa Pelayo-Lozada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/childrens\/childrens-industry-news\/article\/89709-q-a-with-aasl-president-kathy-lester.html#:~:text=Kathy%20Lester.,Washington%2C%20D.C.%20on%20June%2028.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathy Lester<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aasl.digitellinc.com\/aasl\/speakers\/view\/6561\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathy Carroll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discussing specific, achievable actions that advocates can take to improve equity in library funding and staffing at all levels. In the course of this discussion, panelists addressed long held stereotypes and perceptions of school librarians and how communicating the value librarians bring to school culture is also advocacy work.
